Tying the Knot
There are several ways to knot a tie. According to Thomas Fink and Yong Mao, authors of the 85 Ways to Tie A Tie, obviously there are 85 ways!
Travelling the less adventurous path, there are two standard ways to tie knot: the Four-in-hand knot, dating back to the days of the coach, when the men on top of the coach would knot their ties in this manner to prevent the from flying in the wind while they wee driving and the Windsor knot, purportedly invented by the Duke of Windsor, though he later disclaimed the invention.
The Four-In-Hand Knot
1. Cross wide end over narrowed and turn back underneath.
2. Continue around, passing wide end across front of narrow end once more.
3. Pass wide end up through loop.
4. Holding front of knot loose with index finger, pass wide end through loop in front.
5. Remove finger and tighten know carefully. Draw up to collar by holding narrow end and sliding knot up snug.
The Full Windsor Knot
1. Cross wide end over narrow end and bring up through loop.
2. Bring wide and down, around behind narrow and bring up on your right.
3. The put down through loop and around across narrow as shown.
4. Turn, pass up through loop and…
5. Complete by slipping down through the know in front. Tighten and draw up snug to the collar.
