Significant of the Temple
In between the cave the giant Shivalinga raising to a height of 6 feet within a roughly circular chamber has become the main centre of attraction. The Linga is 10 feet in circumstance and is said to be a ‘Swayabhy’ (Natural shaped) Linga.
The cave containng the shrine is 500 meters above the sea-level. A pilgrim has to climb, 1,000 steps to reach it. The lings was first discovered by Lord Ram when he was in exile in Dandakarayana with wife Sita and brther Laxman. The Ramgiri forest also finds mention in poest Kalidas’s Maghadhutanm.
However with the passage of time the temple remained a neglected site. In the last part of the 19th Century, a tribal huter of Ramgiri chanced upon the Gupteswar cave and discovered the linga, while chasing a deer. Later, the king of Jaypore came to know about the cave and rituals are being offered at the temple since then.
