Satapada on Chilika
Satapada, a lake side resort located on the south-east side of Chilika lagoon which is the largest brackish water lake in Asia. Fifty Kilometers from Puri on the road leading to land’s end you find Satapada. A finy cluster of seven islands ’sata’ means seven and ‘pada’ means village - this is where the lake meets the Bay of Bengal. Chilika covers an area of 1,165 square kilometers over the districts of Puri, Khurda and Ganjam. Chilika is home to more than a hundred species of fish and dolphins. With the onset of winter, birds begin to arrive in Chilika, and within a month, thousands congregate in different parts of the lake. Today, Chilika has the second largest congregation of migration birds in the world after lake Victoria in Africa. For the Tourist there are three openings for Chilika i.e. Rambha and Barkul on Natinal highways 5 and another is Satapada on the Puri side. Tourists after reaching there, book their boat according to their choice and go for cruising inside the lagoon. There are options with them who want to visit for 1 hours, for Dolphin sight seeing, or 2 hours, cruising for the sea mouth and Dolphins or visit to the beautiful Rajahansa island both for the sea and lake. There are more than hundred private mechanised boats available with the Dolphin motor boat Association. Some Tourists are like to visit the Bird sanctuary which is about 4 hours duration by boat. Tourists spend their time on water for about 2 to 3 hrs and come to the land for lunch. Then they come back to Toshali Sands. The children can feel better with exposure to nature. The visitor centre developed by Chilika Development Authority is a store house of knowledge. Entry fee is Rs. 5/-. Once you visit the centre you can get to know about the lagoons, its ecosystem, natural wealth, migratory birds, Dolphins etc.
Warning - Carry your drinking water with you. Take care of your children. Don’t enter Chilika in an over crowded boat. Keep your empty water bottles, polythenes with you. Don’t liter the water by throwing polythene packets and empty bottles. On the way, one can see the Alaranath Vishnu Temple at Brahamagiri and if you have time also visit the Baliharachandi- Goddess Temple a midst natural surroundings.
