Puri: Festivals in the month of May

Chandan Jatra (May 4): On this day the “Chalanti Pratima’ (Representative Idol) Madan Mohan idol of Lord Jagnnath comes to Narendra Puskarinia (Pond) at Puri to perform “Chaptra Khela” (Play on the boats). Lord Madan Mohan plays for 21 days on the two boats. After playing for 21 days, the Lord Madan Mohan return to the Temple. Lots of devotees come to see this unique play of Lord Madan Mohan known as “Chapa Khela”.

Akhaya Trutiya (May 4) 3rd day or bright fortnight of Baisakha (May) named as ‘Akhaya Trutiya’ is named for the world famous ‘Rath Yatra’ of Puri. On this day the construction work of three Raths (Chariots) of Lord Jagnnath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra with Sudersan is started by the skilled carpenters.

Budda Jayanti The birthday ceremony of Lord Budha is observed as ‘Buddha Jayanti’ throughout the world. On this day the people who believe in Buddhism offer their devotion. They also are member the teachings of Lord Buddha and try to follow them in their life.

Sabitri Brata (30th May): As the name indicates this Brata or vow is dedicated to Goddess Sabitri, who has fought regiorously with Lord Yama (God of Death) for her husband’s long life. According to mythology. Sabirti is regarded as one of the Sati (Sacred woman) out of the Pancha Satis (five sacred Women) of our time.

Though Sabitri has fully devoted his life for her husband, this Brat teaches all the wives of Orissa to respect their husbands. On this day, each and every married woman goes to the Temples and wears new sarees to offer her worship. Some women perform their puja at home. After washing the ‘Silapua’ (made up stone) they decorate that with haldi (Turmeric), Sindoor (Vermillion), new saree and gold ornaments. Then they offer various types of fruits as ‘prasad’. All day long, the women only take fruits and observe fasting and keep praying to the Goddess for the longevity for their husband.
