Located at distance of 30 kms. from Berhampur, 46 kms. from Gopalpur on-Sea and 4 kms. off the N.H. 5 that connects Koklata with Chennai on the Orissa Andhra Pradesh border, the virgin beach at Pati-Sonapur is one of the most exquisite on the east coast. During the French (Dutch) rule in India, the place was under the Madras Presidency. Considerng its potential the Dutch made this place a Trade and Tourism Centre. The important and export of live-Oyster shell, salt and other goods were made through this place. So this place was named as Port Sonapur. The people of this locality also extended their commerce by yatching small boats through the sea of Java, Sumatra, bali and Borneo etc and made the country affluent. A ruined light house bears testimony to her past glory as a port with commercial activity in the days gone by.

According to heresy a boat was buried in the mouth of the river Bahuda, since that day as the sign of token, the people of this locality used this beach as a port.

There is also a larger mosque established by the Arabians which is in Ruins. On the confluence of the river Bahuda, one can find a live-Qyster shell. In winter a larger number of migratory birds assemble here. As the Sun climbs higher into the sky and sea birds with their strange chripings began to swell overhead. Holidayers intent on fund and frolic also make a bee line for the sea-shore. Quiet and secluded, this is a playground. The confluence is also calm and quiet. One can enjoy it to boat with the help of the fishermen often friendly by nature. A large number of Coconuts, Cashenuts and Casurina trees are spread on the sides of the river and beach. The magnificent sea attracts large number of visitors from different parts of the country. Its invigorating climate, rippling waves and uassuming serenity help visitors to spend few hours without any kind of disturbance.
