Matha- Monasteries, shrine of deities and residence or tomb of religious chiefs. Educational centers too Kalinga(contemporary of Imperial Guptas). It ruled over an area extending from Mahanadi to the Mahendragiri hill in the south. Visakhavarman, Anatasaktivarman, Pravanjanvarman and Nandavarman were the rulers.They patronised Vaisnavism.
Sandhyamatha for evening prayers, Brahmachari matha for the training of unmarried youth in religious and philosophical courses and Satkara matha for accomodating guests. Puri town has 472 mathas. Bharati matha of Bhubaneswara contains cult images of Pasupati sect. Feudatory states established mathas in their territory.
