Mahalaya is observed in most parts of India fifteen days before the formal Dussehra Festival. In Mahalaya special offerings are made to the Souls of one’s ancestors so that they remain at peace. In Orissa, Brahmins offer ‘Trapan” or offering on all fifteen days. Non-Brahmins offer ‘Tarpan’ on any day in the fifteen days. Mahalaya is a time to remember the dear departed. This year Mahalaya falls on the twenty second of September.
