Garajat
Garajat . Hilly areas beyond the coastal tracts-earlier known as Atabika or Jhada region- came under the rule of the local rulers from about sixteenth century- they paid tribute to the kings of Orissa. During the British period, they were the feudatory states of the British power. The British conquest of Orissa in 1803 declared the coastal belt as Mugalbandi and hilly states as Garajat. Nineteen Orissa tributary Garjat stares are Athagarh, Baramba, DhenkanaJ, Hindol, Khandapada, Narasinghapur, Nayagarh, Nilagiri, Anugul, Banki, Ranapur, Talcher, Tigiria, Baud, Daspalla, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanja and Palalahara. Sambalpur Garajats comprised Sambalpur, Bamara, Bonai, Gangapur, Patna, Redhakhol and Sonepur.
The Singhabhum Garajats are: Sareikala and Kharasuan. Sambalpur and Angul came under direct British rule after. . 1848. Kalahandi, another Garajat came under the British in 1867. These states recognised British sovereignty by means of sananda agreements.
