Toshali Sands

Famine of 1866- Was a natural calamity, the result of administrative and economic neglect of Orissa. More than half a million people died (one third of the population) in this famine. It led to the growth of national consciousness, spread of education and development of transport and communication. The Famine Enquiry Commission of 1867 examined the causes of this famine.
