Hoary Past
In the ancient period the areas of Koraput district formed part of the Dandak forest. In the middle of the seventeenth century it’s capital shifted from Nandapur to Jeypore. Later Koraput was chosen by the Britishers in 1810 A.D. for better health prospects. The name Koraput is derived from Karakapentho. Korak literally means hail-stone.

The hilly town Koraput is presently termed as “SABARA SRIKSHETRA” for its sublime to the age old “Darudevata jagnnath”. The Jagannath temple having its unique rites and rituals performed by the Sabara Adivasis. Besides the Sabarai Culture Research Centre and the Tribal Museums around the temple and major attractions for the tourists and scholars round the year. As a showcase of tribal antiquities a lot of interest and curiosity is generated by visitors in the Museum about the age long tribal culture, traditions and costumes of his region.
