Nandankanan Zoological Park : The Nandankanan Zoological Park is a major tourist attraction in Orissa. The main distinction of the Nandankanan Zoo is that it hosts captive breeding of white tigers. Nandanakanan is also, the first ever, captive breeding center of endangered species including rare Asiatic lions.Nandankanan also breeds cheetahs, black bucks and crocodiles in protected areas and then releases them into their natural habitats throughout Orissa.Some of the highlights of a visit to Nandankanan Zoo include lion and tiger safaris, reptile park, nocturnal house, aquarium, a toy train, boat rides and aerial cable cars.The State Botanical Garden is located next to the entrance gate of the Zoo. Features of the garden include the Mughal Garden, Holiday Cottage, Children's Park, Glasshouse, and Japanese Garden. The Botanical Garden is the perfect destination for bird and nature enthusiasts. Plant lovers will enjoy the likes of hibiscus, brownie grandiceps, bougainvillea, dahlia, and chrysanthemum.
Puri Beach : Perhaps the only walkable beach on the eastern coast of India is the Puri white sand beach. Puri beach is characterised by its utter simplicity, the sweets and snacks hawkers, the wonderful and loving people, and the widespread white sand with the waters from Bay of Bengal continuously washing your feet while you walk. Though dirty at some places because of the commercial set ups nearby, you can still have the much needed evening walks in the remaining clean stretch. A lazy walk by the sea with few sips of hot and made on the spot tea or tender coconut add up to that heavenly experience. Moreover, you can also request the local boatman for a boat ride into the sea.
Konark - Sun Temple :The Sun Temple in Konark is a magnificent structure, a stunning monument of religious architecture. Originally the Sun Temple was located nearer to the coast and was used as a navigational point by sailors, who referred to it as the 'Black Pagoda'. The entire temple was designed in the shape of a chariot to carry the sun god, Surya, across the heavens. Seven prancing horses, representing the days of the week rear at moving this formidable stone chariot. The chariot has 24 stone wheels, representing the hours in a day, located around the base of the temple.
Two stone lions crushing elephants and stairs lead into a dance hall, which is adjacent to the temple, guard the main entrance to the Sun Temple. The base and walls of the temple feature a sequence of carvings that represent religious, military, social, and domestic aspects of this period during the 13th C. Many of these are erotic in nature, a style that Konark is famous for.Three images of the Sun God have been stationed to catch the rays of the sun at dawn, noon and sunset. On the grounds around the Sun temple are a small shrine, Mayadevi Temple, situated to the west of the temple towers; the ruins of a brick temple; the group of elephant statues and a set of horse statues are both shown trampling soldiers.
Similipal National Park :Similipal National Park is the prime wildlife sanctuary in Orissa. The hills, valleys and gorges along with plunging waterfalls and jungle atmosphere provide striking scenery within Similipal.The jungle is a mix of sal forest and open savanna. The forest is home to extremely rare and diverse flora and fauna.The wildlife in Similipal National Park includes tigers, leopards, pangolins, sloth bears, Indian wolf gaur, chital, mouse deer, flying squirrels, crocodiles, pythons, hornbills, peafowl, hyena, jackal and vultures. The park is famous for the over 400 elephants and the singing hill myena. The elephants frequent the Chahala salt lick, the best location for tourists to spot them!Over 200 species of birds, 29 reptile species, and over 40 mammals including 2,500 deer and 7,000 sambar call Similipal National Park home.
