The Sun Temple : The Sun Temple in Konark, Orissa in India was constructed sometime in the 13th century and is an excellent example of ancient Indian architecture. The temple architecture reflects a huge chariot with 12 wheels drawn by 7 horses. Narashimadeva, a ruler from the Ganga dynasty constructed this temple. Though all that remains of this magnificent piece of architecture is ruins, it is still an interesting pilgrimage site.
Ratnagiri : Ratnagiri in the Birupa river valley in the district of Jajpur, is another famous Buddhist centre. The small hill near the village of the same name has rich Buddhist antiquities. A large-scale excavation has unearthed two large monasteries, a big stupa, Buddhist shrines, sculptures, and a large number of votive stupas. This excavation revealed the establishment of this Buddhist centre at least from the time of the Gupta king Narasimha Gupta Baladitya (first half of the sixth century A.D.). Buddhism had developed at this place - unhindered upto the 12th century A.D.
Brahmeswar Temple - Bhubaneshwar : The next dated temple, Brahmeswar, shows mature workmanship and advanced architectural features. Here the canons of Orissan architecture is found to have been fully applied. Among the dated temples it is the earliest one where iron beams have been used, and where porch or the Jagamohana consists of the full-fledged Pidha-Deula with the usual crowinging members. It is a pancha-ratha temple with five plasters, namely two corner plasters, two intermediate ones & one central one, fully developed which give the structure almost a rounded appearance.
The Jagannath Temple : The Jagannath Temple located in Puri, Orissa, India was constructed by the ruler of Kalinga, Anantavarman Chodaganga though King Ananga Bhima Deva constructed most of the temple structure that exists today. A large wall that is almost 20-feet high surrounds this huge temple. There are almost 120 shrines located inside the temple. The temple tower or the shikhara at the Jagannath temple is as high as 192 feet.This massive temple has four chambers of which one hall is meant for those who practice classical music and dance forms.
